TEXTILE ART FROM THE ANDES OF SOUTH AMERICA

INCREDIBLE ANDEAN WEAVING TECHNIQUES

Today is Wednesday, so it’s time for the Wordless Wednesday post! This time I’m providing additional information to my photo entry, because I find it so astonishing.

I have been researching about Andean textiles in general, that is, the textiles produced by the pre-Hispanic inhabitants of the Andes region that crosses the modern countries of Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile (northern area) and Argentine (northern area).

I have discovered some fantastic information which I hope to include in future posts.

In the meantime, I’m presenting a photo of a priceless example of weaving from the Wari people of Peru circa 750 – 950 AD.

It seems that this tunic combines cotton material with camelid wools, and that the colors are obtained by tie-dying the segments of cloth, which are then woven into the whole.

The tunic is on view at the Textile Museum, Washington DC.

So, who invented patchwork?

¡Disfruten!

  1. Yes! And I still have a version of a textile I made for a 7th grade research project in 1993. Yes, 1993. I took about a million extra hours to make this textile, but even then I was fascinated by the designs on the textiles. Awesome photo! (And yes, as soon as your link was entered, I got an email message - you don't have to worry if you don't see it - it will show up within a few minutes.) Tweeted this. :)

    1. Hi Janine, I'm happy to have your visit and your comment! I do agree about this art work, so much so that I hope to have a much longer post for FTSF with a more complete focus of this kind of topic. They were really fantastic textile workers! And there doesn't seem to have been much outside influence! So let's enjoy, and I'll see you soon!
