INITIAL THOUGHTS

South America, with its great size and geographical variety, harbors thirteen separate countries, of which nine consider Spanish to be the main language.

It seems to me that these extremely varied countries and cultures are not very widely known in the northern hemisphere. This is a great pity indeed!

There is such richness here as to geography, climate, vegetation, natural resources, plants, wildlife, music, art, handcrafts, prehistory, history, forms of expression, literature, the list could go on and on.

Both the language and the people are very musical. There is also a great feeling for the use of color, which shows in the various visual art forms.

I am both happy and proud to have been born in the Southern Cone of South America and I would not wish to change this, earthquakes and all.

Each country has some distinctive characteristic that sets it apart from the rest. I have often been asked to make a list of identifying traits or characteristics, and here are a few of my personal views on this.

Starting with my neighbor, Argentina, I think there are two most impressive aspects that define this huge country. One is geographical – the Pampa (flatlands); the other is a musical genre: the Argentine Tango. The first defines the life of the Gaucho with his own musical expressions. The second is urban and pertains specifically to the city port of Buenos Aires.

Leaving my own country (Chile) to one side for the moment, there are two other interesting states to the north: Peru and Bolivia.

When I think of Peru, I immediately recall the extraordinary stone works of the Inca civilization and their many contributions to the development of various important botanical species, be they edible, medicinal or ornamental. I will just mention the potato. What would we do without potatoes? Well we can thank the Inca sages for our French fries and so on.

Bolivia, the companion country to the north of Chile, also has a rich archeological history, some innovative agricultural methods and the great Lake Titicaca, the highest in the world, an incredible geographic feature.

Further north still, along the Pacific coast, we find the smaller country of Ecuador, defined by the Equator, the circle of latitude that separates the northern and southern hemisphere, where the latitude is zero. And of course, Ecuador owns the Galapagos Islands, visited by Charles Darwin and said to have triggered his “Evolution of Species”.

Another very interesting and important defining characteristic of Spanish South America is what is known as the Andean cultures, embodied in the various Andean peoples. These numerous cultural groups do not respect the modern state boundaries; they are defined more by characteristics of the geography. These Andean peoples are found mainly in Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador, and include parts of the north of Chile and Argentina.

I am a great admirer of everything Andean. There are so many fascinating aspects, the music, the musical instruments, the textiles, the agriculture, the animal breeding, the archeology, the past history and their way of life in general, still strongly embedded in their rich past.

As to the present, the intermingling of these older civilizations with the Spanish Conquistadores in turn has produced fascinating traits in the people who now define themselves as Chilean, Bolivian, Peruvian, and so on. They are certainly unique and so very colorful in every way.

It has long been my intention to write as many posts as I possibly can about this marvelous world with its incredible variety. Unfortunately, I have not been well lately, I’ve even spent a few weeks in hospital, and this has slowed me down very much. However, I hope to do better in the weeks to come

LET'S ENJOY SOME MUSIC

On this occasion I have chosen to introduce the sound of the music of the Argentine Pampa, the Zamba Argentina. The name of the song is “El Arriero” and the singers are the famous Chalchaleros.

This particular group of singers marked a whole period and a whole generation of Latino listeners. They have since said their farewells to public performances and have now retired from the artistic scene. However, their music lives on, and will continue to do so for a long time.

The “arriero” is a herdsman or cowboy who accompanies and guides herds of cattle on the grasslands where the animals find their food. In Argentina, this corresponds to the vast Pampa or flatlands. The song has two kinds of rhythms. One is relatively slow and depicts the lament of the lonely life of the Gaucho or herdsman. The other is a faster beat that portrays the rapid pounding of the animals’ hoofs, which are also repeated in the Zamba dance by the percussive footwork of the male dancers.

The words of the chorus are especially poignant. There is one line that is repeated a couple of time, and it states the following:

A very free translation for this:

“Our sorrows and the cattle both follow the same paths. The sorrows are solely our own, but the cattle belongs to someone else”.

Such wisdom in so few words!

Here is the video, please enjoy!

CROSSING THE ANDES TOWARDS THE WEST.

Let us now leave the vast Argentinian Pampa and move over the Andes Range into some of the central Chilean highlands.

Here we find the Pehuenche people, the “people of the pignon nut” whose entire way of life is centered on the pine-nut that is the seed of the Araucaria Araucana, a sort of living fossil. Many of these trees are several thousands of years old.

SPANISH VERSION

(This is a bilingual blog)
